What She Doesn’t Show
2026 · acrylic · 12’ x 16’
I grew up watching the women around me walk out like royalty. The gele tied perfectly, the colours bold. And I learned, slowly, that what you see on the outside is only the part she has decided to share. This painting is about that woman. She is a Nigerian mother, but she is also every woman who has ever held a family together while holding her own feelings in silence. The mask. It is carved, detailed, almost beautiful, and that is the point. Her strength is so well crafted that you never ask what is underneath. Is she angry? Exhausted? Overjoyed? Grieving? You will never know, and that is exactly what she intended. The colour. The hot pink background, the golden yellow, the electric blue of the gele. I refused to paint her in sadness. She is vibrant, celebrated, and "doing well." The brightness is the performance. The mask is the truth she keeps for herself. The gele. It tells you who she is: a Nigerian woman, proud of her culture. But she is not only Nigerian. She is a mother in Lagos, Accra, London, anywhere. Anyone who has smiled while carrying something heavy will recognise her. I painted this because I have been close to women like her. I have seen the moment when they finally take the mask off for someone they trust and show who they really are. I've been thinking about how stories like these are carried, lost, and reshaped over time, and how I might contribute to that continuity. This piece feels like small offerings toward creating new visual languages that still echo something inherited that can be received and reinterpreted by a newer generation.Read more
